| GROUP DOG TRAINING CLASS DESCRIPTIONS |

Group Classes are held at It's a 'Paws'-itive Thing located at 7859 S. Cronin (on the frontage road near 79th Street and 88th Avenue leading into Sterling Estates) as well as the Wheaton Park District Leisure Center, Community Center and The Pleasant Dale Park District. Below is a description of the classes offered: PUPPY KINDERGARTEN / MANNERS AND SOCIALIZATION - AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY For Puppies 12 weeks to 6 Months (with age appropriate vaccinations and clear fecal test results). This is the appropriate time to properly socialize your puppy. During this age period socialization is key in their development and research has found dogs that are properly socialized at an early age lead to well-balanced, social dogs - both with other dogs and humans. This is the time where they learn to effectively communication with other dogs through their body language, as well as learn proper human interaction - no biting! We will also go over effective leadership skills, puppy care and the AKC class requirements. You can check out the AKC website for more on S.T.A.R. Puppy requirements and certificates. BEGINNER OBEDIENCE / FOUNDATIONS CLASS (LEVEL 1) For dogs 16 weeks and older (4 months) without any prior group training. Learn the basic obedience commands in a group setting with all of the distractions life has to offer. Sit, down, stay, recall, loose leash walking and appropriate human and doggie interactions covered. Learn how to become the effective leader your dog needs. ADVANCED BEGINNER OBEDIENCE (LEVEL 2) For dogs 24 weeks and older (6 months) with prior group training (or trainer recommendation). Refine your basic commands as your dog matures and enters adulthood. Work on loose leash walking, first response and recall with various distractions. Begin working the requirements needed for your AKC Canine Good Citizen class. We will also do some extensive work on appropriate people greetings (no jumping) and appropriate doorway behavior (no bolting or pulling). ADVANCED OBEDIENCE TRAINING (LEVEL 3) For dogs 8 months and older with prior group obedience training. Refine all basic commands and work on first response with all commands. Start off leash work and skills to get ready for the Canine Good Citizen test and skills necessary for therapy testing. BEGINNING AGILITY - AGILITY FOR FUN Want to spend an hour of just plain fun with your dog? Have you ever wondered if agility is for you? Give it a try - sign up for our Agility for Fun Class! Classes meet on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm. Learn to jump bars and hurdles, go through tubes, and do an A-Frame and weave poles. These types of exercises really create a great owner / pet relationship and work your pet's focus, give them some mental and physical exercise all while having fun. Basic obedience skills required (sit, down, stay). This class is a non-competition, fun class - people and dog friendly dogs only. Dogs must be 8 months old and have proof of all current vaccinations. EXTREME OBEDIENCE / RALLY OBEDIENCE Whether your dog knows their basics or is a veteran at obedience skills, rally obedience puts a fun twist on first response and learning new skills. Using known obedience skills, and additional skills to be learned, you and dog navigate through a marked course performing the skills marked. You are against the clock ... but your only competition is yourself. You and your dog will enjoy the interaction, exercise and mental stimulation. No experience is necessary - just knowledge of basic commands. CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (AKC) Do you and your dog want to earn the distinctive award of Canine Good Citizen? Are you interested in therapy work? Do you just want a dog that is good mannered wherever they go? Then this eight-week class is for you! This class is designed to teach you and your dog good manners, inside and outside the home. Each week we’ll work with your pet to meet the requirements of the AKC 10 step guide to earn their Canine Good Citizen Award. This is also one of the first steps to take should you wish to do any therapy work with your pet. This class is open to all dogs (including mixed breeds) at least one year old. It is recommended that dogs have previous exposure to classroom obedience training and understand sit, down, stay, come when called and loose leash walking prior to class. Students may participate in the AKC CGC Evaluation test given on the last week of class. Testing fee included.
